Working in the mental health field, I have observed many stories of strength by women that have battled and overcome the stigma associated with mental illness, spouse abuse, sexual abuse and discrimination. There is nothing more gratifying then to see a women grow from passivity to a women of power and strength. Knowing that each individual deals differently with assaults on the spirit is essential in the healing process. I have a very close female friend, that has been subjected to abusive power by an ex-husband that was controlling and attempted to destroy her spirit. After her divorce, he broke into her home, rape her and left her lying on the bathroom floor mangled and distraught. Years of counseling and support of family and loved ones assisted in the healing process. She has prevailed in spirit and overcome by seeking a counseling degree helping other women that have been victims to brutality and abuse. She is an example of human strength and how the human spirit can overcome all things with faith and belief in oneself. She has found her purpose through this horrendous act and is reaching out to other women that were victims.
The first step to her recovery was understanding that she did nothing to deserve what had happened to her. Secondly, was empowering herself in the healing process by discussing the event with others that had empathy and understanding about the situation. Now, she is helping others overcome such situations, while educating them about their rights as victims and citizens.
Her story is won of victory. She has a wonderful relationship with her new, male companion and has gained personal power, strength and purpose. Turning this event into something positive took the power away from the perpetrator and gave her strength in knowing there is nothing that she cannot overcome.
